A Memorable Production By CalAA: A Show of Three One-Act Plays
Over 250 people enjoyed a show of three one act plays in Marathi presented by California Arts Association (CalAA), a non-profit
organization formed to support and encourage various creative and innovative activities and artistic projects and archive top quality
presentations in performing arts worldwide.

This quality production was presented on October 9th 2004 by new as well as experienced San Francisco bay area theater enthusiasts.
Mr Madhav Vaze, who is a highly accomplished artiste in Marathi Theater and films, was also present for this occasion.

A similar event is organized by CalAA every year not only to give theater enthusiasts an opportunity to present challenging and
entertaining plays, but also to present to the discerning audience an opportunity to watch superior works of art.

Marathi theater is considered one of the top four successful theaters in India and has a rich tradition spanning decades. Various
talented artistes and playwrights like Vasant Kanetkar, Vijay Tendulkar, Satish Alekar, Mahesh Elkunchswar and Ratnakar Matkari, to
name a few, have contributed to the richness of Marathi theater. CalAA has presented various works created by these stalwarts to the
connoisseurs of quality art living in bay area.

The three one-act plays presentation was a tasty mix of themes from a comedy to serious and philosophical, which not only entertained
the audience but also compelled them to think.
The first one act play presented was “Choricha Maamla”. Written and directed by Rajesh
Ghaskadwi, this play was a hilarious comedy of errors, which sent the audience into
peels of laughter. “Choricha Maamla” is a Marathi version of an original Italian recipe for
laughter, concocted by the Nobel Prize winner playwright, Dario Fo. The recipe is simple;
take a marriage, add a side affair to it. Let it simmer. Just before it comes to boil, add a
drunken and battered thief to it. Now thoroughly mix who is married to whom, and to how
many. Sprinkle the ensuing chaos with a controlling wife, freudian slips, half hearted
excuses, and some hide and seek. Serve it with a garnish of a mischievous clock.
This tasty dish was served with an added spiciness of Marathi Lasnichaa thechaa (hot garlic chutney) to add to it a zany twist. The
artistes Manish Joshi, Pradnya Khadilkar, Shekhar Sakhalkar, Ruchita Ghaskadvi, Mrunal Khare, Anand Khare, and Rajesh Ghaskadvi
held the audience in rapture with their antics.
The second play, “Niranjan, Mala Uttar Havay!”, tackled a more serious theme. This play, based on a
story written by noted Marathi writer V. P. Kale and directed by Arundhati Bopardikar, delves into the
psyche of a young childless couple and their artist friend. How would one react when one realizes
that he was used as an instrument, even in love? What limits would one have to cross to obtain
what is brutally denied by fate and nature? This play deals with various complexities of human
relationships and tries to push beyond the boundaries of tradition and morality. This powerful story
was brought to life by Poonam Sahasrabuddhe, Ashish Sahasrabuddhe and Amol Lele
.
The last play presented was “Sathecha Kay Karaycha?” This play probes into human insecurities in
face of relentless competition, obsession about success and frustration over failure. This insightful
play, written by Rajiv Naik and directed by Anand Ghanekar, tells a story of an advertising film maker
obsessed with the success of his colleague. It raises several questions: What is the nature of the
rat race?  How does one make sense out of it? How does one deal with the frustrations and
unfairness that has become such an integral part of modern life? Manoj Wadekar and Hemangi
Wadekar, who enacted the play with a great finesse, rose up to the challenge presented by its
complex theme.
With the help of over 25 backstage volunteers who worked hard for successfully staging these plays, this event was one of most the
memorable presentations by CalAA. CalAA received a feedback from several people in the audience applauding it for providing
wholesome entertainment that also touched their hearts and minds.
