The first one act play presented was “Choricha Maamla”. Written and directed by Rajesh Ghaskadwi, this play was a hilarious comedy of errors, which sent the audience into peels of laughter. “Choricha Maamla” is a Marathi version of an original Italian recipe for laughter, concocted by the Nobel Prize winner playwright, Dario Fo. The recipe is simple; take a marriage, add a side affair to it. Let it simmer. Just before it comes to boil, add a drunken and battered thief to it. Now thoroughly mix who is married to whom, and to how many. Sprinkle the ensuing chaos with a controlling wife, freudian slips, half hearted excuses, and some hide and seek. Serve it with a garnish of a mischievous clock.

The second play, “Niranjan, Mala Uttar Havay!”, tackled a more serious theme. This play, based on a story written by noted Marathi writer V. P. Kale and directed by Arundhati Bopardikar, delves into the psyche of a young childless couple and their artist friend. How would one react when one realizes that he was used as an instrument, even in love? What limits would one have to cross to obtain what is brutally denied by fate and nature? This play deals with various complexities of human relationships and tries to push beyond the boundaries of tradition and morality. This powerful story was brought to life by Poonam Sahasrabuddhe, Ashish Sahasrabuddhe and Amol Lele.

The last play presented was “Sathecha Kay Karaycha?” This play probes into human insecurities in face of relentless competition, obsession about success and frustration over failure. This insightful play, written by Rajiv Naik and directed by Anand Ghanekar, tells a story of an advertising film maker obsessed with the success of his colleague. It raises several questions: What is the nature of the rat race? How does one make sense out of it? How does one deal with the frustrations and unfairness that has become such an integral part of modern life? Manoj Wadekar and Hemangi Wadekar, who enacted the play with a great finesse, rose up to the challenge presented by its complex theme.
