                                          Guidelines for West Coast Ekaankikaa Competition

California Arts Association or “CalAA” (www.calaaonline.com) is organizing a West Coast Ekaankikaa Competition
during October to December 2008 in San Francisco Bay Area. The first two winners of the West Coast Ekaankikaa
Competition will receive trophies and cash prizes. Additionally, there will be a trophy and cash prize for the following
categories: Best Direction, Best Actor, and Best Actress.

Prizes: 1st place $ 500, 2nd place $300, Best Direction/Actor/Actress: $100 each

Guidelines for participation in West Coast Ekaankikaa Competition:

Who can participate?

Any group of drama enthusiasts in California, Oregon, Washington or Arizona can participate in the CalAA West
Coast Ekaankikaa Competition. From the entries received, 6 Ekaankikaas will be selected for the West Coast
Ekaankikaa Competition.

What are the requirements for the Ekaankikaa?

  • Ekaankikaa should not be more than 1 hour or less than 20 minutes in duration
  • Stage Arrangements should be set up within 15 minutes (points will be deducted for set-up time longer than 15
    minutes) and tear-down should be within 10 minutes
  • All lighting and sound requirements should be set up and marked prior to the start of first Ekaankikaa (no time
    in between to set up or make changes)
  • No smoking, no open fire and no alcohol consumption allowed in Ekaankikaa

What will the participating group be responsible for?

  • Selection of Ekaankikaa and selection of actors and actresses and back-stage team
  • Contact person for the group
  • Permission from the author and honorarium, if any, to the author
  • All music required for the Ekaankikaa
  • Travel and living expenses associated with presenting Ekaankikaa in San Francisco Bay Area
  • Detailed description and scaled sketches and instructions of Stage Arrangements including  props,  lighting
    and sound requirements and other paraphernalia to be put on stage to be furnished to CalAA at least 1 month
    prior to the competition
  • Not to perform the Ekaankikaa in San Francisco Bay Area prior to the West Coast Ekaankikaa Competition.
  • Not to release the video of the Ekaankikaa prior to the West Coast Ekaankikaa Competition.

What will CalAA be responsible for?

  • Booking Theater for the Competition
  • Best efforts to provide all the Stage Arrangements required (will inform the presenting group at least 15 days
    in advance about what is not available)
  • Theater Rent, Insurance, Transportation for Stage Arrangements, Food for the participants on the day of the
    Competition
  • Contact person in CalAA
  • Volunteer help for Stage Arrangement changes between the two Ekaankikaas and lighting and sound set up
    before the first Ekaankikaa
  • Selection of the judges for the Competition (decision of the judges will be final)
  • Ticket Sales and other program logistics
  • CalAA will record the performances and create the DVDs, which would be handed out to each team as a
    souvenir and then could be sold to general public to raise funds.

Time Table and details:

Entries for the Ekaankikaa Competition must be received by 07/31/2008.

Each entry should consist of the following:
Script, Name/s of Author, Artists & Director, rough stage and other requirements, background information about the
participants and DVD or video tapes of past performances (if available).  This information will be used to select the 6
Ekaankikaas for the West Coast Ekaankikaa Competition.

Contact persons for the 6 Ekaankikaas selected for the Competition will be notified by August 15, 2008 leaving
sufficient time to rehearse and get the Ekaankikaa ready for the Competition in October through December time
frame.
